SUN Protection

Must –know facts

• 95% of skin aging changes are caused by sun exposure and most of the skin damage is attributed to UVA (aging rays) compared to UVB (burning rays).
• Long wavelength UVA, which comprises the vast majority of UV light is very close in wavelength to visible light.  A simple rule of thumb: no matter what skin color, if you are outside in daytime, you should protect against UVA even if the sun isn’t hot or doesn’t shine.  UVA comes through, clouds, car windows and windshield as you drive.
• Sunscreen is a must! It should be used daily, year round to prevent hyperpigmentation; dark spots, uneven skin tone, post acne scars and hormonal discoloration.

Common Misconceptions:

Men and women, especially of the darker skin tones often believe they don’t need to use sunscreen since they rarely complain of sunburn, but this is false. Dark skin also needs it! It is best to use a sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor of at least 30 which protects from the damaging rays of the sun. No cosmetics should ever be used in place of a good broad spectrum sunscreen.  Many make-up companies claim to have an SPF of 15 or 20.  This is great in theory, but SPF can only refer to UVB blockers.  In addition, moisturizers and foundations are absorbed by the skin, so they are by nature less effective at sitting on the skin’s surface as sunscreens are. No matter what skin color, sunscreen is a must!

Sun damage doesn’t just occur from lying on the beach.  It happens all the time; during winter and summer, through sunshine and rain. When using lightening and brightening products it makes the skin more sensitive to UV light and can cause the skin to become darker. Even fluorescent light bulbs emit UVA and UVB rays, breaking down collagen and elastin. 

Sun Tips:

• Anti-aging begins with PREVENTION.
• Four out of five wrinkles are directly caused by sun damage alone.
• Get in the habit of applying sunscreen ½ hour before you leave your house or office. 
• Protect yourself from the sunlight that comes through your office windows.
• Change all halogen light bulbs in the house and replace them with standard bulbs. 
• Wear gloves while driving ( preferably without little holes)
• Wear a wide brimmed cotton woven hat when exposed to sunlight. ( straw hat not recommended)
• When exposed to the sun for long periods of time, darker skin has more of a tendency to appear “ashy” especially if it’s not well lubricated, so it’s best to use creams and lotions after showering when skin is slightly damp.

Beach Whites Boutique

The third installation in the series, Runway Ready III was kicked off by Raising Star singer Princess Tia who graced the crowd by singing the Jamaican National Anthem with awe-inspiring talent and grace. Her sultry voice carried through the cool evening breeze out looking the dark seas of Negril and the audience stood in anticipation for what was in store. 

The event began for the first time showcasing the offerings of one of the sponsors Beach Whites which featured pieces from Australian boutique line Sobidah and UK Stylists Michelle Crombie available at Beach Whites All White Boutique.  Their designs where stunning which consisted of white breathable cottons which flowed through the cool night breeze of Negril and a tailored classic white stretch-cotton women’s suit from Italy’s United Colours of Benetton. Beach Whites opened their doors at Boardwalk Village, Negril in June 2011 and is the only all-white boutique on the island.

Madame Suductive by Dacian AlexanderNext, designer Dacian Alexander of Madame Seductive revealed her inaugural collection featuring an incredible line of sequined, glamorous and of course seductive cocktail dresses.

Empress by Jennifer -Jennifer AllenThe impressive Jennifer Allen of Empress by Jennifer showed a magnificent collection which consists of kaftans, shorts, tops, shoes and bags crafted by herself from cottons, linens and burlap.  Jennifer Allen is a legend in the fashion industry with her totally unique designs which she flawlessly executes.

Terrence CalvinTerrence Calvin was the first to show out of the two featured male designers.  Terrence Calvin brought his signature style of rugged urban wear for both male and females to the catwalk with his own take on patchwork, denim and a super-snug fit usually reserved for ladies but greatly appreciated on the male physique too.

After a short break imposed by the much-feared rain, Montego Bay Attorney turned designer Vonique Mason showed the most recent collection of her label Vintage 83. From classic full-length gowns to her unique Grecian-style mini dress, Ms. Mason showed that her intellect was matched up by a distinctive creative style and superior talent.

T&T Fashions by Simone GordonDesigner Simone Gordon of T&T Fashions featured long flowing dresses with a striking mixture of sunbeam colours.  T&T Fashions also showcased handmade accessories with a collection of beads and buttons which boldly accentuate her already stunning dresses.

MinkaMinka who is the most accomplished designer in Jamaica specializing in crochet, presented her collection of beautiful knits ranging from men’s swimsuits, shirts, shorts to formal wear. Minka proved to her long-time fans that she never fails to amaze with her innovations in knitwear.

Cinderella HatsMarcellas James of Cinderella Hats captured the attention of fashion enthusiasts with a collection of wonderful hats.  Cinderella hats had four different themes which took the audience on a journey from Jamaican pride featuring our national colours to the whimsical top hat-inspired creations!

Pablo Palair Designs

Pablo PalairRunway Ready III wrapped with the “big man” on the Jamaican fashion scene, designer Pablo Palair. Palair’s magnificent talent showed Negril that high end fashion is alive and well in Jamaica.  People came from afar to see Pablo Palair’s collection which is best-described as cool, humble and confident. Made up of soft cotton floral or bold satin shirts teamed with elegantly tailored suits and accessories including perfectly engineered leather totes and fedora hats.  Palair’s classic men’s grey flannel suit with the unexpected Capri-length trousers was indeed a crowd pleaser reserved only for the most confident of men.

Fair & White Make UpVictoria Brown’s last-minute cinching of major sponsorship by Fair & White Paris make up was the icing on the cake as not only did the Paris-based makeup company provide all the makeup for the models show - but also, gift bags with their line were presented to all ladies who attended Runway Ready III.  This left female attendees  with smiles on their faces at the end of the show!

Other sponsors of the include Island Multi Media Solutions, the Jungle Night Club, Negril Escape Resort and Spa and Social Media Mogul Mark Hamilton, owner of Elite Society who came on board for the first time. 

The Runway Ready III production team includes Donavon Marshall who is an International recognized runway chirographer having produced fashion shows not only in Jamaica but in the US.  His aim for Runway Ready III was to bring an entire different approach to the show by carefully choosing the best of the best.  Not only was he able to deliver a high class co-ordinated fashion show but left everyone breathless by the artistic movements of the models on the runway. Worthy of special mention, were the Runway Ready models who are all stunning and well poised showing the benefit of Marshall’s tutelage.

The events MC, Patrick Watt who choreographed Runway Ready II was on board again but this time as a MC.  Patrick Watt pumped up the excitement to the show and gave the fashion enthusiasts an oratorical journey to be talked about for a long time.  With his strong voice and an impeccable charm not only did he bring charm Patrick Watt showed his strength which comes from his own experience in the fashion industry and as an event co-ordinator.

New makeup artist Ashley Wilson-Wettang and Makeup by Jayann joined Misako Kasai Coward of Negril De Nails who has been with us since the first Runway Ready show and they all did an amazing job showing creativity and talent in their field.
The most influential figures in the fashion and tourism industry descended on Negril to see the glitz and glamour of the catwalk show. Attendees included Alex Foster of Show Jam, Brian Sang JHTA Negril President, Hungry Lion owner Bertram Saulter with his daughter Shasta Saulter and Sandals Resorts Hotel Managers Andre Dhanpaul and Alexander Pike. 2011 Winner of the hit reality series The Contender, Ricardo Smith was also spotted in the crowd enjoying the show with his brother Tyrone.
